The Supporting an Anxious Teen program has been designed for caregivers of teens, ages 12-18, to support their teen in dealing with worry and anxiety while learning helpful strategies to tackle their own anxiety by:
- Gaining an understanding of how anxiety affects their teenager, the anxiety cycle, and strategies to help their teen manage and alleviate these feelings and behaviors
- Learning positive communication techniques for proactive problem-solving strategies, and better ways to communicate with their teen
- Incorporating preventative strategies like building self-esteem and proactive problem solving
Who is the program best suited for?
The program has been designed for caregivers or teens, ages 12-18.
How does it work?
The Supporting an Anxious Teen program gives caregivers a better understanding of how anxiety affects their teen and teaches them about the connection between their teen's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, while also providing supporting tools.
The program consists of 8 modules using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT incorporates psychoeducation, relaxation and gradual exposure, with the aim of enabling children to identify their anxiety, and to apply their skills to gradually face anxiety-provoking situations.
The contents of each module are briefly described in the table below.
Program Modules:
Supporting an Anxious Teen |
This module teaches caregivers about the different types of anxiety and how anxiety affects their teen. Caregivers will also learn about the helpful side of anxiety and how to help their teen tune into their body. |
Parenting Positively |
This module provides caregivers helpful strategies to communicate with their teen, while recognizing their strengths as a parent. |
Changing Anxiety |
Caregivers will be further educated on how anxiety affects their teen and how using CBT can help make positive changes to reduce anxiety. |
Problem Solving |
Caregivers will learn about boundaries when it comes to worrying and learn skills to proactively problem-solve with their teen. |
Changing Thoughts |
This module encourages caregivers to help their teen develop helpful, more balanced ways of thinking, and also teaches them about acceptance of things their teen cannot control. |
Facing Fears |
Caregivers will be introduced to techniques like graded exposure, strategies to help motivate their teen to face their fears, and tools to encourage relaxation. |
Creating A Plan |
This module supports caregivers in planning for ongoing anxiety management with tools to help them do so. |
Going Forward |
Caregivers will learn preventative strategies to help their teen such as building self-esteem and resilience. |
